Undergraduate Targeted Admission Scheme Māori for LLB Part II

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Submission of this form does not constitute a formal application to the Part II Bachelor of Laws programme
  • All required attachments must be submitted with this application, including the Family Tree and Certification Form, and any relevant supporting documents for your personal statement.
  • Late applications will not be accepted. 

GUIDELINES

To be eligible for consideration under UTAS Māori you must:

  1. Complete the online general Application for Admission into LLB Part II by Tuesday, 1st December 2026.
  2. Be a New Zealand citizen or Permanent Resident;
  3. Provide proof of your Māori ancestry;
  4. Have achieved at least:
    • A  C- grade in LAW 121G and a C+ in LAW 141 and LAW 131 AND  
    • Completed and passed four non-law courses (75 points) and a Waipapa Taumata Rau (WTR) course, AND 
    • Have a LawGPA of at least 3.0 (C+ average) across all law and non-law courses;
  5. Have attended either one of the UTAS Māori information sessions
  6. Complete and submit the UTAS Māori application form for admission into LLB Part II by Friday 2nd October 2026. 
  7. Attendance at a UTAS Māori Interview is compulsory to be considered for entry into Part II Law via the UTAS Māori pathway. If requested, you must be available for an interview at any time between Monday 3 November – Friday 20 November 2026.

Please read the following before completing the Ancestry section of the Application:

Ethnicity is the ethnic group or groups that people identify with or feel they belong to, and is a measure of cultural affiliation, as opposed to race, ancestry, nationality or citizenship. Ethnicity is self-perceived, and people can belong to more than one ethnic group. A person’s ethnicity may not necessarily match their ancestry.

Ancestry is a biological and historical concept and refers to a person's blood descent. You are eligible for consideration under the UTAS (Māori) if you are of indigenous Māori ancestry, and are a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand.

Certification of Ancestry

Please note: Section Two – Māori Whakapapa must be completed in full, including the Family Tree and Certification form, in order for your application to be considered under the UTAS Māori pathway. If this section is incomplete, missing or the information provided is incorrect, your application may not proceed to interview or be assessed for eligibility.

The certification process can take some time, especially if you're waiting on your certifier. We strongly encourage you to start this as early as possible to avoid delays.

To complete this option, you must (i) fill in the names of your ancestors in the form below to the best of your knowledge and (ii) provide details of a person who can certify your ancestry. If there are outstanding concerns, the MAP team may require that additional information is provided by the applicant.

If you don’t know the name of a particular ancestor, please write “unknown.” If there are outstanding concerns, the MAP team may require that additional information is provided.

Please note that the certification process can take time. We strongly encourage you to begin this as early as possible to avoid delays in processing your application

    Certification of Māori Whakapapa/Ancestry:

    • The certifier must be of Māori descent
    • The certifier cannot be a sibling, spouse, parent, sibling of a parent (aunty/uncle) or grandparent to the applicant.
    • The certifier must be able to confirm the ancestry details provided above.
    • The certifier must have agreed to be named and to be contactable if the ancestry details require clarification by the MAP team.

    *If none of the above is selected you will not be eligible to apply under UTAS Māori, without the prior approval of the Pouāwhina Māori. If this applies to you, please contact the MAP team as soon as possible.

    Section 3 - Personal statement

    The UTAS Māori exists to address issues of under-representation of Māori students within the Law Faculty, and also within the New Zealand legal community. It is essential, therefore, that applicants admitted under this scheme are willing and able to use the skills and knowledge they will acquire through their studies to benefit Māori people. This can be done in many ways, for example, through positive role modelling, community involvement, or advocacy. The following questions will help the UTAS Māori panel assess your motivation and ability to contribute to this objective.

    • You should attach relevant documentation to support your statement (e.g. references, certificates, letters of recommendation, photographs), wherever possible.
    • You may have to compile the relevant documents into a single PDF or DOC file for each question below.
