NOTES FOR INTENDING AUCKLAND LAW SCHOOL TUTORS

The Auckland Law School offers graduates in law with an overall minimum GPA of B+ the opportunity to tutor in the compulsory law subjects.

Applications for tutoring in 2024 should be completed and returned to the Law School no later than 10 November  2023.

  • Senior law students are able to apply to tutor in Part I courses. Applications for Part I Semester Two courses (Legal Method & Legal Foundations) will be advertised in April/May 2023.
  • Requisite - Completed LAW 301 Land Law and LAW 306 Equity

Employment is available on a part-time basis only and ideally involves a minimum of 2 hours a week over the 8, or 10 or 16 weeks of the respective tutorial programme. Applications from Part IV law students will be considered for the Part I law subjects only.

  • Please note that if you are successful with your application, it is a condition of your employment as a tutor that you will not undertake any private tutoring in any of the Part I, II and III law subjects. This is a conflict of interest and in direct competition with the Faculty’s tutorial programme and its objectives.

Payments for 2023 will be at an hourly rate not less than $31.65 which includes 8% holiday pay. Tutors who have completed two academic semesters of tutoring at the Auckland Law School will be paid at a slightly higher hourly rate.

Remuneration will be an inclusive payment for the completion of tutorial teaching and tutorial preparation (made on a fortnightly basis). Payment for marking will be made on the basis of the actual number of assignments marked. Marking will be paid separately to the fortnightly payment and will be made after the final marking for each assessment has been returned to students.  Attendance at tutor trainings and briefings will be a separate one-off payment.  Tutors do not need to enter any hours on a timesheet for any teaching, preparation, marking or attendance at trainings/briefings.

Tutorial subjects offered are Criminal, Torts, Contract, Public, Land Law, Equity, and Jurisprudence. All courses include some form of written assessment.  It is expected that tutors mark and return assessments promptly, usually within a maximum of 2.5 weeks from the submission date.
